Traralgon (Kosciuszko St) Primary School
The design of a new junior school for Traralgon (Kosciuszko St) Primary School was developed as a bespoke modular solution, drawing inspiration from the existing site conditions and the school’s pedagogical aspirations.
The design brief developed seven shared learning environments with a large circulation area to accommodate an additional shared learning space when required.
The design approach developed purposeful learning spaces that allows future flexibility, as educational requirements develop and change within the school, particularly in reference to year level enrolments.
The existing teaching methodologies vary dramatically from traditional known configurations to interconnected learning environments. To accommodate these varied teaching approaches, the learning environments are a series of educational spaces that are interconnected via glazed operable walls whilst ensuring two entry/exit openings to each side of the learnings paces. These opening connect all internal spaces to outdoor covered learning areas acting as mediators to open play areas to the north/south and/or east/west of the new learning environment.
The school’s pedagogical process initiates from a traditional learning setting at the beginning of the year developing into an integrated learning model.
Educators can adapt the junior school as collaborative learning areas and/or specific specialized areas.The orientation of classrooms next to each other without circulation spaces allows these learning spaces to become collaborative environments or specialised cohorts.
Throughout the design, visual connection across glazing ensures transparency and interconnection within students learning cohorts.
A large circulation space creates an opportunity for informal and/or collaborative learning.
This area has several options for educators to encourage C21st learning by contracting or expanding the floor area via a column free glazed walls that can be opened into a large 149m2 learning environment.
