Bayles Regional Primary School

A striking intervention in the heart of Gippsland’s farming region, this modest yet impactful education project redefines the idea of regional school identity. Positioned along the C423 highway from Pakenham, the new portal to Bayles Regional PrimarySchool announces itself like a civic billboard bold, purposeful, and unmissable

Rather than conventional signage, the timber-battened screen doubles as a threshold to the school grounds, simultaneously acting as wayfinding, shelter, and community landmark. This 150m² building houses a flexible multi-purpose space for art, music, and performance, designed to be as open and adaptive as the rural context it serves.

Internally, acoustic treatments and biophilic design principles create a nurturing environment. Aliclad thermal windows, aluminium externally, timber internally, maximizse natural light and passive ventilation. Low-level glazing fosters a tactile connection between students and landscape, while verandah-style outdoor zones expand the classroom into nature.

Accessibility is at the core of this addition, with dual ramps offering intuitive, inclusive access for all users. A sandstone plinth raises the building slightly above grade, providing informal seating for parents, students, and community gatherings when the library van rolls through town.

Constructed using a modular volumetric system, the three prefabricated steel volumes were delivered and assembled on-site with precision and speed, minimising disruption and maximising value. Open-ended portal views encourage cross-ventilation and visual connection across the school grounds.

Though compact in scale, this project has created a bold architectural identity for Bayles, one that resonates far beyond its footprint. It also serves as a prototype for scalable, community-centred infrastructure in Victoria’s broader education landscape.
